Fighting Road Fatigue on Long Drives in Colorado Springs
Some experts argue that if you’ve been without sleep for 18-24 hours, your level of driving impairment is the same as if you were intoxicated. That’s scary stuff. If you find yourself getting fatigued while driving your Dodge, Jeep or Chrysler, it’s important to do the right thing.
The best thing you can do is to pull off the road (safely, of course) and take a short nap. Your body knows what it needs, and it’s important to listen. Nothing else is as revitalizing as some sleep. A 20 minute “power nap” works well for most people.
If you simply cannot nap, eating a small, healthy snack every 2 hours is a good idea. A small handful of almonds or lightly seasoned peanuts is best. These snacks have the protein your brain needs to function, and enough nutrients to keep you awake.
Caffeine is a temporary fix for some people, but it’s important to realize that it can take up to 30 minutes to kick in. Grabbing a cup of coffee could keep you from dozing off, but it doesn’t always help make you more alert. Additionally, regular coffee drinkers may have a strong tolerance that keeps caffeine from having much effect. For these people, a regular cup of joe may not provide any additional help.
If you know you have a long or late night drive ahead of you, try to find a companion. Having someone to talk to can keep you engaged and attentive. And if you do start to nod off, having someone there to catch you could save your life.
Additionally, avoid any medicines that make you drowsy, like many night time cold medicines and some allergy medications. And don’t believe the myths. A blast of cold air might actually make you more drowsy (think of how well you sleep on a cool night). The same with loud music. When your body needs to sleep, there are no simple tricks.
