Shadow Moses Incident
A genetically enhanced next-generation Special Forces unit commanded by members of FOXHOUND leads an assault on a remote island in Alaska’s Fox Archipelago. The island, codenamed Shadow Moses, is the site of a nuclear weapons disposal facility. The forces have acquired a devastating new nuclear-capable battle tank codenamed REX, and are threatening the U.S. government with a nuclear reprisal if they do not receive 100 million dollars and the remains of the “legendary mercenary” Big Boss within twenty-four hours.
Former FOXHOUND operative Solid Snake is forced out of retirement and is dispatched at the request of Colonel Roy Campbell to penetrate the terrorists’ defense and neutralize the threat. Campbell also orders Snake to locate two highly important hostages: DARPA Chief Donald Anderson, and ArmsTech President Kenneth Baker. Campbell’s daughter, at the time believed to be niece, Meryl Silverburgh is also confirmed to be held prisoner after refusing to take part of the uprising.
Snake eventually infiltrates the facility via an air vent and locates the DARPA Chief in a cell. He informs Snake of the new Metal Gear unit housed at the facility and explains how to stop the launch of this new unit by using a secret detonation code. Shortly after telling Snake this information, the DARPA Chief suddenly dies of what looks like a heart attack. Meryl, who is held in the adjoining cell, breaks out and assists Snake in his escape.
Shortly afterwards, Snake locates the ArmsTech President, Kenneth Baker. While attempting to untie Kenneth from the pillar, Snake is confronted by FOXHOUND member Revolver Ocelot, who challenges Snake to a gunfight. During the confrontation, a mysterious cyborg ninja appears and cuts off Ocelot’s right hand. Ocelot flees the scene with his severed hand and is followed shortly afterwards by the ninja. After briefly contemplating the recent event, Snake talks with Baker about the uprising. Baker briefs Snake on the Metal Gear project and advises him to contact Meryl, whom he gave a PAL card that could be used to prevent the launch. However, like the DARPA Chief, Baker suddenly dies of what appears to be a heart attack.
After talking to Campbell, Snake contacts Meryl via codec. Snake agrees to meet her in the base’s warhead disposal area on the condition that he contacts Metal Gear’s designer, Dr. Hal Emmerich. As Snake emerges onto a canyon, he receives an anonymous codec call. The mysterious voice calls himself “Deepthroat” and warns of a Tank ambush up ahead. Snake is then confronted by Vulcan Raven in an M1 tank, but manages to destroy the tanks operating system with a few well placed grenades.
Snake enters the warhead disposal area and locates Dr. Emmerich in his lab, who is being held captive by the cyborg ninja. After a brief battle with the ninja, Snake realizes that it is actually his former ally Gray Fox, whom he believed was killed years earlier. After the ninja flees, Emmerich emerges from his hiding spot and discusses with Snake about his role in the facility.
Emmerich agrees to help Snake remotely, using special camouflage to procure information and supplies while remaining invisible. Shortly afterwards, Snake meets up with Meryl, whom gives Snake the PAL card Baker gave to her. As they head for the underground base, FOXHOUND member Psycho Mantis possesses Meryl with his mind control tune and forces her to fire her weapon at Snake. Snake manages to disarm Meryl and defeats Psycho Mantis. Before passing, Mantis informs Snake that Meryl has a large place in her heart for him. After reaching the underground passageway, FOXHOUND member Sniper Wolf ambushes them, wounds Meryl, and after a brief duel captures Snake.
While Snake is imprisoned, Liquid confirms Snake’s suspicion that they are, in fact, twins. Snake is then tortured by Ocelot, who gives Snake the option to give in or fight on. When Snake arrives to his cell, he discovers the body of the DARPA Chief lying in the corner; however, the body looks like it has been dead for days. Eventually Snake is able to escape by fooling the guard and returns to continue searching the underground passageway.
As Snake makes his way up the facility’s communication tower, he is ambushed by Liquid in an attack helicopter, but swiftly defeats him with a surface-to-air missile launcher. As he emerges from the tower onto the snowfield, he is confronted once again by Sniper Wolf. Snake defeats and kills Wolf in front of a grief stricken Emmerich. Nonetheless, Emmerich continues to help Snake.
While making his way to REX’s hangar, Snake is confronted by Vulcan Raven. Snake and Raven battle it out in a freezer warehouse, which results in Raven’s death. Before his death, Raven tells Snake that the DARPA Chief that died was actually FOXHOUND member, Decoy Octopus, a master of disguise. He also leaves Snake with a cryptic message of his violent future and dies.
After infiltrating Metal Gear’s hangar, Snake overhears Liquid and Ocelot discussing Metal Gear’s launch. Thinking that using the PAL card to deactivate the launch, Snake actually activates Metal Gear REX. Snake is confronted by Liquid, who is standing on top of REX, and is informed that his entire mission was manipulated by the renegades to allow the launch of the nuclear weapon.
Shortly afterward, Liquid assumes control of REX and fights with Snake. Gray Fox suddenly appears and destroys REX’s radome, but ultimately dies trying to defend Snake from the bipedal tank. Snake was able to destroy REX and is challenged again by Liquid in person, on top of REX’s destroyed frame. After a rough fight, Snake ultimately wins by knocking Liquid over the edge of REX’s head. He is then reunited with Meryl and they escape using a Jeep in a nearby garage. During their escape, Liquid comes chasing after them in a jeep of his own.
After a fire fight, the two jeeps crash into each other at the outside entrance to the underground tunnel. Liquid emerges from his jeep and pulls a gun on Snake, but suddenly dies from the FoxDie virus. Campbell calls Snake and tells him that Snake and Meryl are officially declared killed in action to protect Snake from the government searching for them in the future. Shortly afterwards, Dr. Emmerich and the remaining survivors appear from a hidden bomb shelter.
