The abbreviations “CJ” literally stands for civilian jeep. The CJ 5, CJ 7 and CJ 8 Jeeps are vehicles that were based on military jeeps, but made available to the general public later. The very first of all CJ Jeeps was created in the early 1940s and was identified as the CJ-2. The CJ Jeeps endured a process of evolution as years passed and each new model came out with different variations. In the late 1980’s, the CJ7 and CJ8 were replaced by the Jeep Wrangler.
More than 600,000 CJ 5 jeeps were manufactured before the production of this model ended in 1983. These CJ 5 jeeps were manufactured with V6, F head, 4 cylinder engines under the hood, and there were many different models of the CJ5 Jeep created. Models included the Tuxedo Park Mark III & IV, the Camper, the 462, the Renegade I & II, the Super Jeep and the Golden Eagle.
The CJ 7 Jeeps were first produced in the late 1970s and production of this model ended in 1986. The CJ7 Jeep was build with all wheel drive, a hardtop, tilted steering, solid steel doors, and chrome grills, bumpers, and mirrors. This model was actually produced with a diesel operated variant, but the production of the diesel power model was limited to only a couple of year’s time. In addition, CJ7 Jeeps were offered with a total of four different motors: the AMC Inline four, the Inline six, the V8, and the diesel C240.
CJ8 jeeps were actually a truck version of the CJ 7 jeeps identified as the Jeep Scrambler. This model became available to the public in the early 1980s. A total of 30,000 units of this model were manufactured over the years.
