The Big Predicament: Choosing an SUV

The sport utility vehicle (SUV) as we know it today is a 4-wheel drive vehicle capable of handling very rough terrain easily. It had humble beginnings as the legendary jeep back in World War II. Since then, SUVs were developed based on the basic idea of the jeep. Most SUVs are comfortable and luxurious and do not compromise much in terms of off-road capability.

The SUV is a capable off-roader because of several factors. First is its 4-wheel drive system which gives power to all four wheels for better traction and torque. Second, SUVs have high ground clearance which enables them to pass over obstacles regular cars can’t handle. Finally, the huge, thick tires they carry give them superior traction and grip on wet and uneven surfaces.

These SUVs come in many sizes. There are the full-sized SUVs, which have 3 rows of seats and are capable of carrying large loads. Below this tier are the midsize SUVs, which provide a good balance between comfort and carrying capacity. Then, there are the compact SUVs, which are small and carry a limited number of people yet retain their off-road capability.

Recently, car dealers in Indianapolis have introduced the crossover SUV. These SUVs are a mix between a car’s chassis coupled with SUV characteristics like ride height, larger tires, or 4-wheel drive capability. Crossover vehicles, like traditional SUVs, may also be full-sized, midsize, or compact.

The car dealers Indianapolis has usually offer a large inventory of SUVs. Potential buyers usually look for several criteria when buying an SUV. These include towing capacity, passenger seating, cargo capacity, and off-road as well as snow driving capability. The last two are little used features, but come in handy in times of emergency.

For most people, however, a compact, midsize, or crossover SUV is probably enough. Car dealers in Indianapolis will recommend the right type of SUV based on one’s needs. Most people do not need a full-size SUV, unless they are carrying a lot of people, or towing a trailer. For those who do not intend to go off-road, a crossover SUV is all they will ever need.
