The Legend Of Scorpio: A Review
No, that’s not the name of an upcoming movie and definitely not the story of a venomous scorpion.
‘The Legend of Scorpio’ is the name given to the limited edition Mahindra Scorpio Coffee Table book, which I managed to get my hands on. The Scorpio revolutionized the Indian SUV market, something the company has been adept at since it brought in the Willy’s Jeep. And this is truly a collector’s edition book for fans of the mighty muscular SUV.
The book talks about everything, right from the conception to the birth to the phenomenon that became the Scorpio. Moreover it has different chapters ranging from the problems and challenges M&M faced when they started, right up to the latest development in the Scorpios since 2002.
It is by far the most comprehensive repository of everything Scorpio. Rarely do we see a company being so candid about its failures and the problems that it faced during the conception and evolution of the product. A seasoned player in the market, M&M goes to the extent of admitting they were rookies in the modern SUV market, and that they did not have the technology for it. They admit that the success of the Scorpio wholly and solely goes to the suppliers who stood with the company in fulfilling their goals by bringing out their best.
The book also has a lot of exclusive photographs from various rallies including the Raid de Himalaya and the Rally Dos Sertoes, the latter being known as one of the toughest rallies in the world where Scorpio showed its mettle. There are pictures ranging from the early design drawings (which are extremely interesting and I wouldn’t want to spoil it for you by describing it here) to the launch pictures with eminent celebrities, as also pictures of customized Scorpio owners like MS Dhoni and Baichung Bhutia, captains of the Indian Cricket and Football teams respectively.
All in all, an absolute must have for proud Scorpio owners, as well as Trivia junkies on the Indian Automobile Industry. It is an impressive book and does justice to the task of describing one of the biggest success stories of the new automobile era.
